BOARD MEMBER

Mission

Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture is a multiple award-winning, youth-led charitable community organization based in Toronto.We create a brave space for Filipino-Canadian youth, both second generation and newcomers, to overcome multiple barriers that prevent them from meaningful engagement in society. At Kapisanan, youth activate their creativity to explore identity, fostering pride and self-confidence, inspiring and empowering them to realize their full potential.

Role of the board of directors

The Board will support the work of Kapisanan and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Kapisanan’s Executive Director, the Board and Executive Director work in partnership.  The involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP, GOVERNANCE, AND OVERSIGHT

·       Guide the strategic planning process and approve the strategic plan

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as s/he implements the strategic plan

  • Review outcomes and metrics created by Kapisanan for evaluating its impact and performance against the strategic plan

  • Approve Kapisanan’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities

  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to Board and committee meetings

  • Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director

  • Assist the Executive Director and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members

  • Partner with the Executive Director and other Board Members to ensure resolutions are carried out

  • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments

  • Represent Kapisanan to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization

FUNDRAISING

Board Members will consider Kapisanan a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Kapisanan can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Kapisanan expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is appropriate with their capacity.

Board terms/participation

Kapisanan’s Board Members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full Board meetings.

Director commitments include:

·      Attend quarterly Board meetings

·      At least 8-10 hours per month dedicated to organizational business

·      Lead in planning and implementation of fundraising initiatives

·      Be a Kapisanan ambassador

QUALIFICATIONS

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Kapisanan’s mission and who has a track record of leadership in business, government, philanthropy, arts and culture, the Filipino community, or the nonprofit sector.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • An understanding of Kapisanan’s mission, services, and programs

  • Awareness of the cultural, business, social, and political environments affecting the organization

  • Leadership experience demonstrated by accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, arts and culture, the Filipino community, or the nonprofit sector.

  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, as well as a passion for, and commitment to, improving the lives of Kapisanan’s beneficiaries

Service on Kapisanan’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for pre-approved administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.

CLUTCH vol. 10 & navigation vol. 5 program coordinators

REPORTS TO:

KAPISANAN's Programs Manager and Executive Director

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

KAPISANAN is seeking CLUTCH Vol. 10 and NAVIGATION Vol. 5 Coordinators. CLUTCH & NAV is a FREE 6-month arts-based program for young Filipinx youth (ages 17-24 years) to start a dialogue with each other, get mentorship from professional artists within the community, have access to professional tools to hone their creativity, define their identity, explore their community, and tell their stories on their terms.

The CLUTCH & NAV Coordinators will report to the Programs Manager. The CLUTCH & NAV Coordinators will promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, helping KAPISANAN to develop the best possible quality programs and events. The CLUTCH Vol. 10 & NAV Vol. 5 Coordinators will also be a local liaison and representative for KAPISANAN’s CLUTCH & NAV Programs within Toronto, and will be expected to represent the organization in a responsible and ethical manner that is consistent with KAPISANAN’s objectives and overall ideology.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  1. Basic Responsibilities:
    • Manage, coordinate, and evaluate all aspects of KAPISANAN's signature Arts Mentorship Program "CLUTCH Vol. 10" & "NAV Vol. 5," and its activites;
    • Provide leadership to CLUTCH Vol. 10 & NAV Vol. 5 participants;
    • Attend meetings with Programs Manager as requested.
  2. Primary Responsibilities
    • Management/Coordination of CLUTCH Vol. 10 & NAV Vol. 5:
      • Securing facilitators and mentors, scheduling, and evaluation of all CLUTCH & NAV workshops and activities, including Final Presentation;
      • Documentation, feedback, evaluation, and administration of CLUTCH & NAV activities;
      • Purchase and manage resources for CLUTCH & NAV, e.g., art supplies, books, etc;
      • Nurture program participants and encourage them to reinvest their own knowledge and newfound expertise;
      • Engaging and managing volunteers to assist as necessary.
    • Lead Coordination and Management of Final Presentation for CLUTCH Vol. 10 & NAV Vol. 5 Participants:
      • Lead in Coordination of Final Presentation
      • Lead in the set up and strike of the exhibit;
      • Leading and supporting participants to present their work with excellence;
      • Lead in coordination of printing promotional flyers and Final Presentation booklet, including providing a copy and images to the designer in a timely manner;
      • Engaging and managing volunteers to assist as necessary.
    • Leadership
      • Steward all the CLUTCH & NAV mentors, facilitators, artists, and participants to observe KAPISANAN Guiding Principles;
      • Generate enthusiasm among program participants;
      • Challenge others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model;
      • Lead in continuing the innovation within KAPISANAN in fulfilling its mandate

QUALIFICATIONS/INTERESTS:

We are seeking a dynamic, committed young person who has:

  • In-depth understanding of challenges facing youth in the Filipinx-Canadian community
  • In-depth understanding of Filipino and Filipinx-Canadian culture, experience, and struggles
  • Combination of education in a related field and/or equivalent life experience
  • A passion for empowering youth from an anti-oppression and anti-racist framework
  • Good working knowledge of Tagalog and/or other Filipino dialects is an asset
  • Ability to manage program budgets and materials, and develop program resources
  • Good organizational and time-management skills; able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Keen interest or some background in the arts and culture production
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), though we are willing to train
  • Adept in using social media, i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, blogging platforms, mobile apps, etc.

NUMBER OF POSITIONS:

2 (1 CLUTCH Vol. 10 Coordinator, 1 NAV Vol. 5 Coordinator)

START DATE & TERM:

The position shall be effective for 1 YEAR commencing on October 1, 2017.

COMPENSATION:

The CLUTCH & NAV Coordinator positions include volunteer hours and shall each be paid $11.40 for each hour of services, to a maximum of 6 hours every other week for a maximum of 10 weeks + 40 hours for coordination between March 2018 and August 2018.
